Blog. Yep, that’s exactly it, blog. You know there’s actually no real definition for the word? Even the almighty and all-knowing Google can’t define the word blog and believe me, I’ve tried. For three years prior to deciding to fly around the world and finally settle down long enough to attempt my degree (yes I’m “one of those”) I was a researcher for a web based firm reporting to the construction industry and one rather lazy Friday afternoon, decided to give it a go since business was slow.
So, with coffee at my side and unlimited internet to play with I set off on my journey to try and work out just what the word blog means and where it may have originated. Wanna know what I found out? Zilch. Nothing. Even Google told me to “go fish” and that has never happened before, not even when I went to look up the meaning of the word Octavarium which coincidentally is a word that was invented by the prog metal band Dream Theater as a song / album title but that is beside the point.
The point is that there is a major genre of media out there in that wonderful world we know as the ‘web or the ‘net that is by definition, undefined. So now I really feel the need and indeed warmly invite the possibility of enlightenment from anyone who should stumble upon this. The question is of course, what is a blog?
From reading a few, they seem to be excerpts out of someone’s daily routine or even maybe a narrative of a perspective or an opinion on, well, just about anything from something trivial like how some people just can’t function in the morning without coffee to more deep and meaningful topics such as quantum mechanics.
I guess then that you could look as a blog as being a forum for discussion of a given topic as stipulated by the author based upon their opinion or perspective. The ensuing discussion being the readers then sharing their thoughts and so the cycle continues. Maybe also you could look at a blog as being a public chronology or diary of a person’s life in both first and third person perspective.
But then all we know is, they call it the blog..
